Job Description
This internship supports the Clean Water Trust by having interns complete mini-projects like drafting highlight projects for annual reports and green bond reports. The role helps provide nearly $9.6 billion in loans to 300 borrowers across Massachusetts for water infrastructure projects. Cities and towns benefit by protecting public health through environmental standards, and interns gain skills in public administration, policy, and finance.
Commonwealth of Massachusetts manages state public deposits and investments with integrity and leadership. The Massachusetts Clean Water Trust operates within the Office of the State Treasurer, providing below-market rate loans and grants for water infrastructure. The Trust manages the Clean Water State Revolving Fund and Drinking Water State Revolving Fund programs. It has delivered $9.6 billion in loans since inception.
Interns draft highlight projects for annual reports, prepare project descriptions for board meetings, develop case studies for websites, and support outreach planning. They shadow Program Associates on borrower communications and day-to-day operations with MassDEP partners. Additional tasks involve assisting with board meeting packages, loan documentation, and borrower monitoring. Work occurs using MS Office Suite, especially Excel and Word, in the office at 1 Center Plaza, Suite 430. A genuine challenge includes lifting up to 10 pounds and sitting for extended periods during record organization and file transfer projects.
Compensation starts at $20 per hour for high school students, increases to $22 for undergraduates, and reaches $24 for graduate students. The program runs part-time from day shift June 1 to August 7, 2026, in Boston. Benefits include exposure to Trust leadership, practical experience in intergovernmental finance, and training in loan and bonding processes. It focuses on developing skills for future public administration careers with no mentioned travel. Physical requirements demand sitting for long durations and occasional light lifting.
