Technicians perform field testing of soil compaction, asphalt density, concrete strength using tools like nuclear gauges and slump cones. They write reports with test results, observations, recommendations in field notebooks or software. Preparation includes reviewing project plans beforehand to understand requirements. Basic lab tests involve mixing concrete samples and calculating volumes. Equipment maintenance ensures tools like ovens and scales function properly. They communicate with contractors via phone or site meetings about issues like failed tests.

Salary ranges from $40,000 to $60,000 depending on experience, plus reimbursement for certifications. Work occurs on site in various locations like Virginia or North Carolina. Responsibilities

  • Perform field materials testing of soil, asphalt, and concrete under direction
  • Prepare detailed field reports with test results, observations, and recommendations

  • Ensure field and laboratory equipment is in operating condition

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED
  • 1+ years of related experience in materials testing
  • ACI certification for concrete preferred
  • VDOT certifications for soils, concrete, asphalt preferred
  • Ability to read plans, specifications, and reports
  • Ability to write routine reports
  • Ability to apply mathematical formulas for quantities and estimates
