Para-Educator - Summer J Camp

Mental Health Assistant Full Time $32,000 - $36,000
Overland Park, Kansas, United States

Job Description

Inclusion of youth with developmental disabilities enhances participation in summer camps, allowing children to join peers in activities like games and hikes. Para-educators modify experiences to build social and physical skills, accommodating special needs through tailored adaptations. This role supports emotional security by tracking progress and collaborating with families on goals.

The Jewish Community Center of Greater Kansas City runs J Camp, a program serving boys and girls from grade 1 to 8 with over 20 activities including swimming, archery, and STEM. Staff members foster skills in negotiation and creativity, meeting American Camp Association standards for safe environments licensed by state health authorities.

Educators work full-time or part-time from 7am to 6pm between May 26 and July 31, assisting children during crafts, sports, and outdoor skills. They document progress in goals set with parents and specialists, using inclusive methods for group integration. Responsibilities include leading sessions with kids aged 6 to 13, communicating via reports and meetings. A challenge arises in balancing individual modifications with camp-wide schedules, requiring flexibility despite varying attendance.

Pay starts at $16 per hour, higher with qualifications, for part-time or full-time roles. Schedules prioritize availability across the summer, avoiding evenings or weekends. No benefits outlined, focusing on camp experience.
