Job Description
Nursing students build practical skills by assisting in care for acutely ill patients under registered nurse supervision. Student nurse assistants perform direct physical care in hospitals and clinics, gaining experience in a Magnet-designated facility. They support nursing staff while developing competencies in patient handling and care techniques.

Typical duties involve providing physical care in situations requiring demonstrated competency, working under direct supervision. Assistants interact with nursing staff, patients, and leadership, accommodating school schedules with one required 8-12 hour shift weekly. Work includes rotating shifts across day, evening, and night, with potential for more hours or every other weekend. A challenge is balancing academic commitments with varying operational needs in year-round positions.
The role pays $18 per hour with weekend and shift differentials, on a 20% FTE basis, adjustable around school schedules. Located at University Hospital, American Family Children’s Hospital, East Madison Hospital, and clinics in Madison, Wisconsin. Responsibilities
- Provide direct physical care to patients in selected situations where thorough knowledge of technique and demonstration of competency is required
- Work under the general supervision of the Registered Nurse when caring for patients
Requirements
- Current enrollment in an accredited Nursing program and successful completion of the program’s hands-on entry-level clinical course
- Preferred - Previous health care experience
- Current CPR/BLS certification
