Job Description
New graduate nurses transition from education to clinical practice through residency programs, providing entry-level care while integrating lifelong learning. Transitioning nurses build confidence, resulting in 80% retention post-residency by supportive preceptors. They coordinate care, triage needs, and adapt plans for diverse units like med-surg and telemetry.
The University of Kansas Health System hosts the residency at Olathe Hospital, training 200 new graduates yearly across 13 hospitals. It specializes in acute care, oncology, and pediatric services, fostering mentorship in a 15,000-employee network.
Nurses perform assessments with stethoscopes and electronic scales, administer injections in oncology units, and triage phone calls. They delegate to aides, participate in morning huddles, and use patient portals for education. Resources include glucose monitors for diabetes checks and ventilators for critical cases. Preparing for full-time shifts without extensive experience challenges orientation.
Full-time in Olathe Hospital, Olathe, Kansas, on day and night rotations with residency support for 12 months. Benefits encompass student loan repayments up to $10,000, comprehensive health plans, and 401(k) matching. Development offers mentorship, unit certificates in chemo safety, and access to multidisciplinary in-services for growth.
