At Elgin Community College, adjunct faculty deliver instruction in English as a Second Language, creating syllabi and evaluating progress to help students achieve educational goals. This teaching role supports over 9,000 learners in transfer programs and adult education.

Faculty conduct assigned classes and labs, prepare lessons, provide syllabi with grading standards, attendances, behavioral expectations, course outlines. They verify enrollment, submit grades; prepare labs, enforce safety; keep accurate records, provide timely feedback; maintain office hours, refer students to support, accommodate disabilities. Work involves classrooms and possibly labs; challenges include accommodating diverse learners with occasional lifting up to 10 pounds in sedentary tasks.
This adjunct position pays $1,069 or $1,109 per contact hour based on education and experience. Varied morning and afternoon classes; exempt with retirement plans, paid time off, professional development, tuition reimbursement, EAP.
Responsibilities
- Conduct assigned classes and/or labs
- Prepare lessons
- Provide course syllabus including grading standards, attendance policies, classroom behavioral expectations, course outline and contact information
- Verify student enrollment and submit grade sheets
- If a lab is involved: Prepare labs, Enforce lab safety procedures
- Keep accurate record of student performance
- Provide students with timely feedback
- Maintain office hours and voice-mail/e-mail communication
- Refer students to student support services
- Accommodate special needs students
- Perform other duties as assigned that pertain to the job description
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in the discipline or in a related discipline
- One year of teaching experience in the discipline or a related discipline
